Book/DJ Condition: VG Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 567 pp; German authors were extremely popular in the United States in the first half of the 19th Century, when the country was populated with large numbers of German immigrants, and when the idealism of German literature appealed to the new nation. This is one of the earliest editions available, and it is a striking-lookin g book in very nice condition. The book contains excerpts of the works of more than two dozen German writers. Hardcover Full dark brown embossed cloth; elaborate decorations on front and rear boards; gilt lettering and inticate decoration on spine. Frontis and engraved half-title page; viii + 9-567 pp. Illustrated with engraved portraits of 8 of the authors whose excerpted works are included (Luther, Lessing, Moses Mendelssohn, Herder, Goethe, Schiller, Richter, von Schlegel). Other authors include Kant, Boehme, Lavater, Fichte, Hegel, etc. Boards are and worn along edges, particularly spine edges; spine shows a split of about an inch. Moderate foxing to half-title page, title page, Table of Contents and portrait margins; otherise light foxing throughout book. Small owner signature on one of end pages as well as the original bookseller label. Oveall binding is tight though some sections are feeling a bit loose. Corners bumped.
